ASTHMA   First and Foremost, Black Toxic Mold Exposure is highest among black and minority children which presents in an early childhood illness such as Asthma…

Asthma disproportionately affects minority children living in poverty.
Asthma prevalence rates are significantly higher for lower income and for some racial and ethnic minority children.

Black children have a higher risk of mortality, and a higher rate of emergency department visits for asthma when compared to white or Hispanic children, as well as a higher prevalence of doctor diagnosed asthma (13.4%).

Disparities in housing conditions by household income, race, and ethnicity likely contribute to the observed disparities in asthma prevalence.
National survey data indicates that the likelihood for unhealthy conditions is greater in low income and in some minority-headed households (e.g.,
non-Hispanic Black, American Indian).  Un-Equal Black Children asthma Black Toxic Mold

Low income minority children are less likely to be prescribed medications, less likely to take recommended medications to control their asthma, and are less likely to attend outpatient appointments.

“It isn’t clear why asthma outcomes are worse in African American patients. Anne Fitzpatrick, PhD, RN, CPNP, MSCR Mold Asthma The findings from our study suggest that poorer asthma outcomes are not genetic or biological in nature, but are instead due to a number of socioeconomic and environmental factors that impact asthma care,” says Anne Fitzpatrick, PhD. “These factors can be modified and improved with the right interventions.”

Fitzpatrick is associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Asthma Clinical Research Program in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine.

Childhood asthma has been linked to indoor mold growing in a child’s home as a result of moisture problems such as water leaks. The connection between mold and asthma, however, is complicated and not fully understood. Asthma is often associated with allergies, and molds spread by releasing tiny spores into the air, which can cause allergic reactions.

A team led by Dr. Tiina Reponen of the University of Cincinnati Tiina Reponen, Ph.D. Exit NIEHS, lead author on the study and a UC professor of environmental health Black Mold Asthma has been  investigating the relationship between mold and childhood asthma. Between 2001 and 2003, they collected dust samples from 289 homes with infants who were an average of 8 months old. At age 7, the kids had allergy skin tests and tests for asthma. The study was funded by NIH’s National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Isolating an environmental trigger could lead to better informed preventive efforts to reduce the incidence of asthma, a condition on the rise nationwide and an important public health concern. According to previous studies, asthma is estimated to cause several thousand deaths annually and cost more than $15 billion per year in direct medical expense.

“Early life exposure to mold seems to play a critical role in childhood asthma development,” Tiina Reponen, Ph.D.  , lead author on the study and a UC professor of environmental health, was quoted as saying in a UC Healthnews press release…
